1st Clacton-on-Sea Girls’ Brigade Company was established in 1922. Currently, there are approximately seventy girls in our company, with quite a large group of seniors (age 11-14), which is encouraging.
Each section continues work towards their badges. Last year’s topics included: team games, outdoor safety, cookery, Bible Study and sign language.
Our summer camp 2004, saw us return to Stubbers Adventure Centre, Upminister, where we enjoyed various outdoor activities including; wobbly boards; high ropes; canoeing; banana boating and quad biking. Daily Devotions explored the theme of ‘choices’, encouraging the girls to consider which important choices they make.
Duke of Edinburgh Award
The award is split into three levels – Bronze, Silver and Gold. This award can be worked for through various organisations and schools.
Each level is then split into four sections – Physical Recreation, Skills, Service and Expedition, with an additional section of Residential for the Gold Award.
The Award takes a lot of time, hard work and determination to complete, from six months – two years per award depending upon the level.
We have had many of our Brigaders complete the Gold Award and we are very proud of them all. It is a great achievement for them. This entitles them to wear the Gold Award Brooch.
Social Warm Hub
We run a Winter Warm Hub and a Social Hub for the rest of the year, serving our community, where a wide mix of local people attend. We offer a safe and warm environment, with free refreshments, which provides social interactivity for those who are lonely or vulnerable. This is held in the Friendship Lounge on Wednesdays, 12.00pm to 1.30pm. Please ask Amanda Day for further information.
Enfold
The Enfold Project, which began in 2012, is now well established and serves breakfast to approximately 30 homeless & vulnerably housed people each week. The Enfold project is staffed by a team of volunteers from our church and others. Job Club volunteers also attend to offer help and guidance to our visitors, as well as ‘Peabody’, who deal with housing and benefit issues. Our Parish Nurse (Amanda Day) runs this Enfold group along with a team of volunteers, mostly from PABC. It is held on Thursdays, between 9.30am to 11.00am in the Welcome Centre.
Saturday Coffee Morning
We run Coffee Morning every Saturday between 9.30am to 12.00pm in the Friendship Lounge and outside when weather permits. They serve hot and cold drinks, as well as toast and an assortment of home-made cakes.
